Condition, On‑Hire / Off‑Hire & Bunker Surveys

Independent surveys supporting charter operations, vessel condition verification, damage documentation, and bunker quantity determination.

Consult Maritime LLC provides independent condition surveys, on‑hire and off‑hire surveys, bunker quantity surveys, and ultrasonic tightness testing services to support shipowners, charterers, operators, insurers, and maritime stakeholders.

These surveys establish the condition of a vessel, document existing defects or damages, verify bunker quantities, and assess the seaworthiness of cargo spaces and watertight arrangements. The objective is to provide an accurate and independent record of the vessel's condition at the time of attendance, helping reduce commercial disputes and supporting informed operational decisions.

Overview

Independent surveys are undertaken to verify the condition of hull structure, machinery systems, cargo gear, and operational status, and to document findings in a structured format suitable for owners, charterers, insurers, and technical managers.

Condition Surveys

Condition surveys provide an independent assessment of a vessel's structural, machinery, safety, and operational condition. Surveys may be commissioned by shipowners, managers, financiers, insurers, or charterers seeking an objective evaluation of maintenance standards, operational readiness, and visible defects.

Typical areas of assessment may include hull and deck condition, cargo spaces, machinery spaces, accommodation, safety equipment, and general housekeeping standards. Findings are documented through detailed observations and photographic records to provide a clear understanding of the vessel's condition at the time of attendance.

Where required, condition surveys may also include ultrasonic tightness testing of hatch covers, watertight doors, and cargo space closures. Ultrasonic testing is an effective method of identifying potential leakage paths, verifying sealing integrity, and supporting cargo protection and loss prevention without the need for conventional hose testing.

On-Hire / Off-Hire Surveys

On‑hire and off‑hire surveys are conducted at delivery and redelivery to establish the vessel’s condition relative to charter party requirements. The objective is to document the extent of any damage, excluding fair wear and tear, occurring during the charter period.

The survey focuses on cargo spaces, main deck, hatch covers, and cargo systems, with additional areas inspected as required by the client. Ultrasonic testing of hatch covers and watertight/weathertight closures may be performed where instructed to assess integrity.

Findings are presented in a structured report identifying condition, deficiencies, and operational limitations, supporting liability management and dispute avoidance.

Bunker Quantity / ROB Surveys

Bunker quantity and Remaining On Board (ROB) verification provides independent assessment of fuel quantities to support bunker delivery, financial settlement and bunker claims management.

The scope may include review of bunker delivery documentation (BDN), observation of soundings and measurement practices, and reconciliation of reported quantities based on available records. Quantities are presented in a structured report providing an objective basis for verification and dispute resolution.
