Independent Maritime Management System Internal Audits
Independent Internal Maritime Management System Audits
ISM Code paragraph 12.1 states: "The company shall conduct internal safety audits ashore and at sea on a periodic basis of not more than twelve months to ensure that all safety and pollution-prevention activities are compliant with SMS". According to section 12.5 of the code, "Auditors should be independent of the areas under audit unless this is impractical due to the size or nature of the business".
Our company is accredited as vessel auditors and inspectors, and we perform ISM ISPS MLC internal audits on different types and sizes of vessels in major US ports including Port of New York & New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk and other US Gulf ports.
ISM Internal Audits:
Consult Maritime conducts ISM Internal Audits to assess the implementation and effectiveness of the Safety Management System (SMS) in accordance with the ISM Code. Audits evaluate shipboard operations, maintenance systems, risk management, emergency preparedness, incident reporting, corrective actions, and compliance with company procedures. Through onboard inspections, interviews, and document reviews.
ISPS Internal Audits:
Our ISPS Internal Audits evaluate compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and the effectiveness of onboard security arrangements. Audits review access controls, restricted areas, security equipment, crew awareness, drills, security records, and implementation of the Ship Security Plan (SSP).
MLC Inspections:
Consult Maritime provides MLC Audits and Verifications to assess compliance with the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC 2006) and promote crew welfare onboard. Audits cover employment conditions, accommodation standards, hours of work and rest, crew documentation, medical care, food and catering, and onboard welfare arrangements. Through interviews, inspections, and record reviews, we help owners and managers maintain compliance, protect seafarer welfare, and prepare for Flag State and Port State inspections.
Harmonized Audit Program:
The Liberian Registry is the only flag administration offering a Harmonized Audit Program, combining the requirements of the ISM Code, ISPS Code, MLC 2006, and Annual Safety Inspection (ASI) into a single audit process. This streamlined approach reduces duplication, minimizes vessel downtime, and improves compliance efficiency.
As an authorized Liberian Flag State Inspector, Consult Maritime conducts Liberia Harmonized Audits on behalf of the Liberia Maritime Authority, helping shipowners verify safety, security, labour, and statutory compliance through one coordinated audit with clear, structured reporting and practical recommendations.
